Actor Danny Masterson, known for his role in the TV series That '70s Show, has been found guilty on two out of three counts of rape by a Los Angeles jury.

The charges were brought against him by three women who were former members of the Church of Scientology and accused Masterson of sexually assaulting them at his Hollywood home between 2001 and 2003.

The prosecution argued that Masterson used his status as a prominent Scientologist to evade accountability. While the jury was deadlocked on the third count, resulting in no verdict, Masterson still faces a potential prison sentence of up to 30 years.

One of the victims expressed a mix of emotions, including relief, exhaustion, strength, and sadness upon hearing the verdict. Masterson's wife, Bijou Phillips, reportedly wept as he was taken into custody.

A previous trial in December 2022 also ended in a hung jury, prompting prosecutors to retry the case with new evidence. Although not charged with drugging the victims, testimonies revealed that the women had been drugged before the assaults.

Masterson was initially accused of rape in 2017 during the height of the #MeToo movement. The charges were filed following a three-year investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department.

Throughout the trial, the prosecution alleged that the Church of Scientology had played a role in covering up the assaults, a claim firmly denied by the organization.

The survivors stated that they were discouraged by Scientology officials from reporting the rapes to the police and were instead pushed to rely on the Church's internal justice system.

The defense sought to undermine the credibility of the accusers by highlighting inconsistencies in their testimonies and suggesting motives of revenge. The trial also involved discussions about the practices and teachings of Scientology.

Masterson's defence team unsuccessfully sought a mistrial, while the Church of Scientology, although not a defendant, expressed concerns about its portrayal during the retrial.
